You Tube Keeps Tabs On Big Brother And The BART Police
You Tube keeps things honest. Once again the Bay Area BART police are in question over a posted You Tube video where an officer throws a drunk’s head through a window.
“The officer takes about seven steps while pushing Gibson off the train and across the platform toward a wall, which has a concrete base and glass panels above. There is a collision, and glass shatters onto the platform and the men.”
This comes on the heels of the New Year’s Eve shooting of an unarmed man by a BART police officer. The incident was captured on a cell phone and immediately posted on You Tube:
BART once again had some explaining to do when on Sunday the You Tube video appeared with the title: “BART cop breaks window w/drunk guy’s face.”
The BART police asked for a news conference after the video was viewed by over 300,000 people. The question is would they have held a press conference if the video wasn’t filmed and posted on You Tube?

I think for certain, not.
Most police officers I know are dedicated to solving crimes and watching over various vulnerable communities using as little violence as possible. But a small percentage of police in just about every jurisdiction will use violence as part of their routine. After all, some entered police work for the wrong reasons, including the opportunity to wield authority with little oversight. YouTube when used responsibly by the citizenry can level the relationship, just a bit, between police officers carrying weapons and constituents who are not.
Or course there’s good eggs and bad eggs and it’s great that we now have a civilian means to help keep tabs–it’s the American way. (Though the police said they are looking for the person who posted the video.)
Little trivia: In England, the average person is captured on camera 300 times a day by police security cameras.

It looks like the drunk guy was nothing more than a sack of potatoes, so when the cop shoved him up against the wall to perform a search, the guy was just flung through the window. I don’t think he (i.e. the cop) did it on purpose. The glass seemed really thin, too, since it shattered to so many pieces when a chunk fell onto the ground — perfect for dramatic effect.
Or, another theory, the glass broke because the guy’s head got thrown through it by the BART cop.
