Duke’s endowment doesn’t need another championship

As if you needed another reason to root for Butler (or against Duke tonight). Consider their endowments.

There are no state schools left, which means I had no choice but to come up with another wholly unathletic measure to determine who to root for.

For some crazy reason, the size of a university’s endowment — its invested funds — is one of the major factors in determining it’s rank in the U.S. News and World Report’s annual rankings (the quality of its professors is not nearly as important). Duke clearly doesn’t need the money that would be generated by an NCAA Championship, it’s got one of the largest endowments in the country — $6.1 billion, according to Google.

Butler, on the other hand, has pocket change. Just $139.6 million.

Winning the NCAA Championship can produce huge financial windfalls for colleges, and therefore directly impact their rankings as academic institutions (seriously, that’s crazy right?).

Just another reason to root against Duke tonight.

    About Me

When I was fifteen, my baseball coach condemned me to a stands-bound life. "Graham, you're a pretty good fielder," he said. "But unfortunately it's easier to teach kids how to field than it is to show them how to hit." Stung by this unceremonious end to my baseball career, I trained my crosshairs on his breed. Over time, I have come to realize that he isn't unique, American sports are full of coaches just like him....

Recently, I have written weekly Yankee columns for the Bronx News Network blog, and articles for the Norwood News, a Bronx newspaper, as well as Sumter, SC's newspaper, The Item. I am currently a Master's candidate at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.
