Only YOU can fix my fantasy football team!
I was about thirteen rounds into a sixteen round fantasy football draft last night, when I realized that I was putting together a terrible team. Sitting in front of my television with my laptop, the Yankees-Red Sox game had gripped 98% of my attention. Fantasy football was but a mere afterthought. But it suddenly hit me, “My fantasy football team is almost as ugly as Kevin Youkilis.”
For thirteen rounds, every time my computer “Dinged!” to alert me of my turn, I clicked the first name I recognized and quickly re-fixed my focus on the spectacle of Josh Beckett getting treated like the female lead in a Lifetime movie (get it? I’m saying he got slapped around).
Anyway, when I was finally able to assess the damage, my disaster looked like this….

As you can see, I’ve got a deeply flawed squad on my hands. Lee Evans and Torry Holt as starting wide receivers? Every pass to Lee Evans this year will be treated by Terrell Owens as a personal gesture of disrespect. If Lee Evans saw three TD’s last year, sans T.O., how many can he possibly expect this year?
And yuck! Look at that bench! Carson Palmer is a good backup QB, no doubt. And Chester Taylor figures to see plenty of short passes, courtesy of the great Viking, Brett Favre….but these other guys? No thanks.
So please, readers of True/Slant, I beg you to heed my call! Offer your advice. Got a sleeper I should pick up? Perhaps you think one of my scrubs is superior to one of my starters? Lend me your wits!
Only you can FIX MY FANTASY FOOTBALL TEAM!

Your team isn’t that bad, Katesy.
The only big problem are your WR’s because you don’t have a #1 guy. I’d just lay low and pounce on the waiver wire or free agents when you get the chance. Keep Holt though. He could end up being a solid value.
Thanks Jon, I appreciate the encouragement.
I wish I could say I was thinking the same thing about Holt when I picked him up, but I’m pretty sure my mind was on Robinson Cano. That said, Holt is officially on my team to stay.
How do you feel about New England defensively? I feel like last year’s numbers were deflated by the extra pressure they faced making up for their Brady-less offensive colleagues.
In response to another comment. See in context »Graham, try to trade Palmer for a receiver. Quarterback is always overrated in fantasy.
Proof, I won a 12 team league last year with Tyler Thigpen as my starter for the last 6 weeks of the season.
In response to another comment. See in context »OK, I don’t think this team is that bad. You’re biggest problems are at WR and flex. Joseph Addai is constantly hurt. In fantasy sports I’m always a fan of bold action – I would say see who the best WR you can get for Phillip Rivers is, then start Carson Palmer.
Either that or see what the best receiver you can get for Terrell Owens is.
People often make the mistake of trying to use their bench players to get someone else’s starter, and that never works. Gotta give to get. So I’d offer your most-likely-to-be overvalued guy (TO) or your most replaceable starter (Rivers) and see what comes back.
As a Pats fan, I can tell you NE’s defense will be good, but not necessarily spectacular for fantasy. They won’t get you a lot of sack points, and it remains to be seen whether the new secondary will come up with a lot of INT’s. But I think they’ll be top 10 for sure.
Roons and Brian,
It seems you both agree that I ought trade one of my QBs for a starting WR. I’m inclined to agree that Rivers is the more easily-traded candidate.
I shall add updates as my team begins to retake its shape.
I won 3 out of the 5 leagues I played in last year and I have won my friends league 2 years running.
Having said that: your time is fine. In fact, barring injury, you should do fairly well. [Though you could also be unlucky].
The trick to FF is to have a mixture of consistent players with some break out guys. You have those: Felix Jones, Carson Palmer, and Slaton. This year I’d include Holt in this category as well. You also need to show some respect to Westbrook, Rivers and yes, Addai.
You cuffed Westbrook with his backup, which is solid, and you have AP’s backup in Taylor, who is definitely gonna end up starting a few games — and if the Vikings do really well, come Fantasy playoff time Taylor is going to be playing instead of AP who’ll be benched to rest.
I’d drop Shockey and pick up someone like Jonathan Stewart or Mendenhall, or keep him around in order to drop him later when you see some waiver wire WR’s for your flex slot.
Finally, come mid-season, if both Palmer and Rivers are doing almost the same, package one of them with Evans and get a # 1 WR.
Your D and Kicker are fine. From time to time you can always pick up mediocre defenses that are playing NFC West teams.
Now you must hear my FF situation. I’ve only had one draft so far. This is my team.
Philip Rivers
Steve Smith
Terrell Owens
Santana Moss
Michael Turner
Chris Johnson
Owen Daniels
Jamal Lewis
Bernard Berrian
Domenik Hixon
Matt Hasselbeck
Visanthe Shiancoe
Rob Bironas
Philadelphia
Also: I just read that Rivers signed a 93 m extension. This means he is going to drop off this year b/c he’s going to lose his hunger. I think Palmer, on the other hand, is pretty hungry.
In response to another comment. See in context »Ali,
Thanks for the advice. The comment board is overwhelmingly in favor of Rivers being moved, and I shall make that happen. I’m not convinced I can get someone to take Evans off my hands so easily though.
Good point on Shockey. I think I might see if I can package him, instead of Evans. My league is primarily New Yorkers, and there’s a chance he’ll be overvalued by someone.
Your WR’s and RB’s are crazy strong. I also really like Owen Daniels to keep up the strong production this year. Are you thinking of trying to move Rivers, as well? Or are you staying with that squad (I’d probably leave it be, but my track record in fantasy sports is as weak as they come)?
