Get off my field with that notebook!
Football is a game of espionage and intrigue, as was highlighted during the Belichick – Videotape scandal….and that aspect of it clearly makes coaches paranoid, like crazy paranoid. The increased mobility and ubiquity of communications technology has led to some awkward media-coach interactions lately.
From the Florida Times-Union:
Colts coach Jim Caldwell tried to prevent reporters from bringing notebooks to the practice field during training camp, but he later backed off. Reporters can bring cell phones, but they aren’t allowed to use them to use Twitter, text, surf the Web or to make calls.
Chargers coach Norv Turner fined cornerback Antonio Cromartie $2,500 for using Twitter to complain about training-camp food.
UF quarterbacks coach Scott Loeffler told freshman quarterback Jordan Reed to answer questions from the media by saying that he was happy to be in Gainesville and happy to be a part of the Florida program. And that’s exactly what Reed did: He answered every single question by saying, “I’m just happy to be a Gator.”
How much access should the media and fans get at football practice?
