Williams shows ‘em what’s what

After a tough regular season, Gary Williams’ Terrapins have made the NCAA tournament.

From the Baltimore Sun:

Though Williams won’t acknowledge this, there was a sense of redemption surrounding yesterday’s unveiling of the NCAA tournament field. He would like us to think there was never a rainy day around his program. But this tournament trek has been one of his toughest. And one of the most satisfying, considering the heat that has surrounded Williams and his program.

Moment for Terps to remember

Will making it to the Big Dance be enough to satisfy Williams’ critics?

Maryland should not be in the dance!!! I’m an ACC fan, but I do not support the Terps playing this March. They were under .500 in the conference and they lost to Morgan State, lost to Georgetown (which at the time didn’t seem so bad) and took them overtime to beat Vermont (from the American East – where the conference champs BINGHAMTON only got a 15 seed). Gary Williams should stay, but Maryland should go from the tourney. I feel the selection committee just wanted to keep the ACC and Big East even at 7 seeds each. They’re one and done!

Maryland’s ticket to the Dance is interesting considering Division I men’s basketball committee chairman Mike Slive insists that the committee considers a team’s “whole body of work.”

It’s definitely tough to argue for Maryland’s entrance into the tourney. They posted a meager 3-8 record against top 25 teams and although those three wins are certainly of a marquee caliber (Michigan State, UNC, Wake Forest), those eight losses included some genuine blowouts (85-44 loss to Duke 1/24 and 93-64 to Clemson 2/17). Also, for an ACC squad, a 55 RPI is nothing to write home about.

    About Me

When I was fifteen, my baseball coach condemned me to a stands-bound life. "Graham, you're a pretty good fielder," he said. "But unfortunately it's easier to teach kids how to field than it is to show them how to hit." Stung by this unceremonious end to my baseball career, I trained my crosshairs on his breed. Over time, I have come to realize that he isn't unique, American sports are full of coaches just like him....

Recently, I have written weekly Yankee columns for the Bronx News Network blog, and articles for the Norwood News, a Bronx newspaper, as well as Sumter, SC's newspaper, The Item. I am currently a Master's candidate at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.
