If Koyie Hill could hit .250 or .260, he should be considered as the regular. Throwing out 40 percent of base-stealers and handling the pitchers counts for a lot. He’s a future manager or pitching coach.

When Koyie Hill emerged this season as more than a routine backup catcher, I was hoping that Geo would be spurred on by the competition, but, as you say, he just never got going. Geo’s sub-par season was just one of the reasons the Cubs fell short this year, but certainly a big one. I believe he’s sincere in his desire to regain his 2008 form. Certainly a demonstration of why team chemistry is so important. Always liked “Hank.” He seemed to know how to handle Big Z!

“Hank White” kept in touch with the Cubs situation from afar, with the Padres, and I’m sure Geo’s situation frustrated him. He had quite a bit invested in this protege. Still, I think Hill’s pitch-handling talents and discipline would have rubbed off on Soto if they had an up-close and personal relationship. I think team’s catchers should locker together for overall team communication.

Good job, George…I think not having Blanco around was a huge problem. Koyie Hill, although tough and hard-working, isn’t necessarily a mentor; he still wants to be a regular player and does not have the “backup” mentality by which he’d help Soto out. He was gunning for Soto’s job, not being a teacher.
