Greetings and Salutations

Welcome to my blog. I’ve never done this before, so pardon the many early mistakes surely looming on the horizon. I plan to write about liberal politics and life in Washington, but I’ll also indulge my more pedestrian interests–baseball, music, etc. So we’ll consider questions such as these:  What lessons from previous Democratic Administrations ought the Obama Administration pay special attention to? What distinguishes Exile on Main Street and The Blueprint as  the greatest albums of the last four decades?

One fundamental assumption of this blog is that no matter how much we think we know, the Internet allows us to learn more. It’s become hackneyed consultant speak to describe a blog as a “conversation,” but my intention is, yes, to converse with you, my dear readers. (If I can assume to have any…) I want your ideas, your input, and your complaints. That’s how this is going to succeed.

Thanks for tuning in. Hope to keep you entertained.

    About Me

I live in Washington, D.C., a few blocks away from the White House--hence the title of this blog. In my day job, I'm the associate editor of Democracy: A Journal of Ideas (www.democracyjournal.org). I've written for The Nation, Politico, The New Republic, Mother Jones, and the NY Daily News, among other places. This blog will be about politics and the Red Sox.

    What I'm Up To

    • Jared Bernstein profile

I’ve written a piece for Mother Jones about Jared Bernstein, Obama’s top progressive economic advisor. Is he a token, or does his role signal something broader about the administration’s intentions? Check out the piece here.

    • Obama’s first draft

Barack Obama’s success last fall was unlikely, but did not come out nowhere–he owes a lot to the pioneering work of Cesar Chavez, farm worker organizer of the 1960’s and ’70s. Or so I argue in the latest issue of In These Times. Check it out here.
