Google, sex, and matrimonial bliss
Alex Tabarrok reproduces these Google search suggestions from Dan Ariely, showing the most common responses to “How can I get my girlfriend to…” and “How can I get my boyfriend to….”
Replacing girlfriend with “wife” and boyfriend with “husband” reveals some subtle yet profound distinctions.
Gone are all attempts to “get head” or sex of any kind from the girlfriend/wife – but trust and love and losing weight are all still there – as is shaving. For women, the #1 desire for boyfriends to propose is gone – replaced with “fall in love with me again.” Tellingly, perhaps, wives would like to know how to get their husbands to “leave the house” while husbands would like to know how to get their wives “to shut up.”
Perhaps these are lists young couples should compare prior to taking the matrimonial plunge….if anything, even more profound than the distinctions are the many ways in which the lists remain the same.
P.S. – My apologies to Alex. In the first version of this post I attributed the link to Tyler when it was in fact Alex who had posted this … er … study….
P.P.S. – I’m not sure how I missed this, but of course the #2 suggestion for “how can I get my wife to…” is “swing” which I sincerely doubt is in reference to something one might do at a park. My earlier statement that “all attempts at sex” were gone is obviously not correct.
