Maybe Brolin was only joking
While it may be an odd sort of joke, my wife insists that Josh Brolin was probably only joking when he said this. So maybe it’s not as creepy as I thought. My wife also thinks that this sort of joke is probably warranted given the rather colorful acting career of Diane Lane. For those of you just reading this now, Brolin is starring in a new film with Megan Fox wherein the two have some romantic moments.
Brolin said:
Everybody says it’s very uncomfortable doing love scenes. My wife has done a few movies with a couple of love scenes, maybe this was maybe a revenge of mine, of some sort. If you look at it from that perspective, it’s kind of like the ultimate revenge. Megan Fox is the ultimate revenge, you hear what I’m saying?
So I can see how this would be a joke – and maybe even part of a larger running joke between Brolin and Lane. Surely this subject has come up before now. Maybe he even told her he’d get his revenge someday.
Either way, I think that there is an instinct among people who comment on celebrity culture to immediately suspect the worst intent, the most devious or jealous motivations – to dredge up the scandal even where there is none. It’s funny to me, since I rarely ever write about celebrities or think much about Hollywood drama, how easily it is to stoop to that level once you do start thinking this way. Not that I have a great deal of sympathy for movie-stars. The price of fame and all that. But it does display one of our more inescapable traits – gossip – and how quickly and easily we find ourselves participating in it.

An important fact that contributes to your initial reaction: On December 20, 2004, Brolin’s wife Diane Lane called the police after an altercation with Brolin. He was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. Lane declined to press charges and the couple’s spokesperson characterized the incident as a misunderstanding. (via Wikipedia)
That’s what makes it creepy, and rightfully so.
Does this mean I have to write another post about how it’s not a joke? Oh my. Reason number #18 why I shouldn’t write about celebrities.
