Thank you for continuing to talk about Ron Wyden's plans for health care reform. I am really sick about the fact that Congress and the President don't seem to give his ideas any credence, when the Healthy Americans Act or at the very least the Free Choice proposal could really do something to reform health care.

Any suggestions?

Exactly right. And beyond this it allows doctors and other supply-side players to not have to worry because no big, national insurers will ever come to negotiate rates with them. This works to everyone's benefit except the consumer and the taxpayer.

The insurance lobby has been successful in putting big bucks in the hands of Congressmen who will make these decisions to "encourage" them to make it a states rights issue and let each state decide to set up an exchange if they desire. Insurers do not want to compete nationally because they are protected against anti-trust laws now, so they share information and basically have an oligopoly that keeps premiums going up across the country for all insurers. Insurers are about to get a huge windfall of 36 million new subscribers with no strings attached to keep the insurer from raising premiums at their whim. Also, where are all the doctors going to come from to treat this influx of patients? None of the proposed reforms will control the costs in the system, so we are destined to revisit the issue in the coming years and then we will also be faced with the Medicare and Social Security trainwrecks that everyone has forgotten about.

Well done Ed. I agree 100%. A lot of this debate could have been put to rest early if "more choices" had been the primary "call to arms."

BTW, I first comment on T/S for me. I enjoy reading a lot of the bloggers here, but your post made me sign up just to say kudos!
