Paradigms Lost Playlist: Rufus Wainwright’s “The Art Teacher”
It has been a while since the last installment of the PL Playlist. Apologies for the lull. Here’s Rufus Wainwright with a long-overdue dose of song. Wainwright tells the story of a young girl who falls in love with her art teacher, forever changing her. It’s a rich portrait, a narrative unlike anything you’ll hear in pop music. Delivered in the first person, the woman’s story remains incredibly poignant coming out of Wainwright’s mouth, which is a testament to the moving lyrics. Enjoy:

Nice, I just wonder why he wrote it from a female perspective.
B,
He said he was tired of writing songs from his own perspective. It’s good fiction, no?
good fiction yes
In response to another comment. See in context »It is good fiction. I like how he uses the instrumentation to signal a passing of time.
I’m hearing a lot of Phillip Glass inspiration, myself.
