California preparing for the worst on climate change

Instrumental temperature record of the last 15...

Yesterday, the state of California (it’s good to be back) released an expansive new plan to combat the effects of global warming. The report comes at the behest of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and looks at the impacts of climate change on everything from rising sea level, to loss of habitat, to water management, to weather disaster preparations, and beyond. The result is a sober document that posits a clear-headed approach to how to navigate the coming decades. How the state goes about implementing the many recommendations made in the the report is another question altogether. As the Natural Resource Defense Council’s Gina Solomon told the L.A. Times:

“These are all just words on paper without funding to carry them out. The federal government should help states prepare for climate change. Spending some money now will save billions later, and these strategies save lives.”

So, here’s to California’s ounce of prevention, however theoretical it may still be. Look for other states to follow suit and lay out their own global warming scenarios, too.

  1. collapse expand

What I find interesting is that almost 20 people viewed your piece and no one said anything, people are funny. I wonder if Arnold is taking his clues from the govt of Tuvalu, a country that is at risk of vanishing entirely due to global warming.

  2. collapse expand

I’m very proud of California’s efforts to be on the forefront of innovative environmental measures. With our sorry state economy though, I just hope we can afford to stay that way…

  3. collapse expand

This highlights the debilitating futility of politics in the state that is CA. You have a plan (I have not read it, though I’ll take David’s word that it is sober) for dealing with something probably every soul in the state agrees is important, and yet there are zero resources to implement. At least other states have reasonable likelihood to fund their own programs.

    About Me

I've published two novels: The Secrets of the Camera Obscura (Chronicle Books), and The Third Eye (Nan A. Talese/Doubleday). I'm currently working as a journalist for AOL's Sphere. For the past three years I also spouted political opinion for AOL's Political Machine, which I also helped edit. My non-fiction has appeared in places like Men's Vogue, The Wall Street Journal Magazine, USA Today, Newsday, Travel + Leisure, GQ (Spain), and Vanity Fair (Italy). I've dabbled with short stories, publishing in Nerve and a few small journals.

The other half of my split personality finds me playing a variety of instruments for a variety of bands, and writing songs for film soundtracks.
