At the risk of sounding like the pro-gun argument that guns kill, not people, GAG), it's how we use the tech more so than tech itself that's to blame.
I agree that Macintyre doesn't present much (really any) evidence to back his claims, but Macintyre would possibly counter that he wasn't doing science journalism. He was doing more of a think piece.
In any case, as you point out, we invented the technology, so it’s up to us to control it and decide how we use it. When any new technology came out (TV, phone, radio) it was always blasted as killing family time, storytelling, personal time, the book, you name it. But we still have all these things. Just maybe not as much. It really comes down to your own personal values—how you want to divide up your time.

In spite of Carr's admission to the contrary, I really don't know any other avid readers who are no longer able to enjoy a novel due to loss of attention span. I'm quite capable of reading online and off - and wonder who these people are that are somehow being forced to choose. Lame.

Great list, thanks for sharing it ... also, after your thorough thrashing (well-deserved) of Macintyre I've made a note to always stay on David's good side!
