Raises more questions than it answers. What on Earth do you believe you have in common with Jonah Goldberg, other than the claim that the Republicans who ran this country from 2003-2007 weren't authentic conservatives (a claim that is as fatuous coming from him (who never criticized Bush when it would have mattered) as it is earnest coming from you)?

I think it will be helpful to quit reducing the conservative base to a few demonized public figures, or even referring to the conservative base, and begin analyzing the independent movement which is a mixture of conservatives, liberals and libertarians, unified by a concern for progressive policies characterized by spend and tax, heavy-handed regulation, healthcare takeover and general over-reach. The reason moderates have been attacked is they continue to play the game of smearing the boogey-people while ignoring that a grass-root resistance to progressivism is materializing and changing the political landscape.

As a right-leaning thinker myself, I have to agree with your basic assessment. I don't hold any excitement in regards to the GOP, and I doubt that they would represent me well if they were returned to power. The only enthusiasm I can muster is fueled purely by my grave worries about the current administration. The GOP has yet to clean house, as it really must, and until it does, many of us will continue to be skeptical of the very party with which we share the majority of our opinions.
