Scratching the surface of The Wire’s genius

This 100 greatest lines from The Wire video is a must-see.  But it’s a testament to the show’s capacity for quotables that I instantly thought of 10 or 12 not on the list.  You can play at home, Wire fans.  What’d they miss? [Obviously, NSFW]

OK, a hint: this entire scene, for one.

Great pick JC! That scene was special indeed…

Being that (1) i don’t care for ‘crime dramas’ and (2) never had HBO, i never started watching The Wire until i’d seen it praised on high by a couple T/S contributors. I’ve finished season 1 and S2 is in queue; however, still couldn’t resist watching the 100 quotes vid. I must say, don’t think they came close to picking the best quotes from season one.

First of all, anything and everything Omar says is a quotable.

One of my faves from S1, and this is a paraphrase:
Det. Freamon: ‘If i’m goin’ to the show, i’m gonna rub me some titty.’

And how could they have left out Marlow’s statement on justice in the world, “You want it to be one way, but it’s the other”?!

I literally just watched the finale two nights ago a waited until now to watch this clip. The perfect way to quickly relive the series. But, there are a few lines that I thought easily should have been in there.

After Cheese gets shot: “That sentimental mother f***** just cost me money”

And McNulty season 5 after he tells Lester about his serial killer idea: “We must kill again.”

    About Me

As a young boy growing up in a small rural town in western North Carolina, I had one simple dream: getting the hell out of a small rural town in western North Carolina.

Kidding, kidding! I love the South. Where else on Earth could produce both Flannery O'Connor and Lil' Wayne?

But I have always felt the pull of the big city, and the promise of action, adventure and all-night bodegas that come with it. I've lived in San Francisco, LA, and New York, and I've been lucky enough to work as a television editor for such networks as VH1, BET, CMT, Lifetime and The Travel Channel. I enjoy documentaries more than anything, though, and I'm currently doing research for my own: an investigation of that ongoing American obscenity we call the Drug War.

I'm also a writer forever straddling the line between fiction and nonfiction. Screenplays, skits, polemics, plays, blogs, short stories and personal essays: don't make me pick just one, I love 'em all. On True/Slant you'll find me in scavenger mode, digging up bits of interest from all corners of the internet (it has corners, right?). From politics to pop culture, from the truly idiotic to the truly inspired - it's all grist for the mill.
