All fair points.

Michael, believe me I know this -- as someone who tooted around (safe) Western Europe on my own dime when I was 20 for 4 months, producing 10 stories freelance in that time.

But it's sleazy for news org's to cheap out on young uns' ambition if the reporting really is dangerous. You want firsthand news badly enough? Pay for it to get gathered safely. NO story is worth your life.

Michael Totten.
Michael Yon.

They're both kinda putting the lie to "the blogosphere doesn't gather news, only rebroadcast it", and they're less the exception proving the rule these days..

That said, at any scale, the one thing you need to have to do _anything_ in hostile places is to Be Prepared..

(IIRC Yon has gotten $ from traditional outlets after self-financing his first tour or two of Iraq/Afghanistan..)

we need, i think look at the root words here. how is a journal different from a log? where do lines start to be drawn. are newspaper reporters substantially different from television reporters. some say they are. should we have different terms for them? why, if one writes for one business model, should one be treated differently than another writing for a different business model?

Part of the issue nowadays is that it's very difficult for young journalists to get major media outlets to send them overseas. A lot of editors will even say: 'Well, we won't send you, but if you pay your way over there, we'll give you work." So I don't think it's fair to say, oh, she didn't have the credentials--you don't get the creds unless you go, and if you're waiting around for the Times or the WaPo or whoever else to send you, you might be waiting for a long time...
