Jetpacks are almost here, and sort of real

“Fly the dream,” the slogan of the Martin Jetpack company has it, and now you can fly the dream too, if your dream is to soar to a height of four feet and rocket forward at speeds approaching 6 mph. Now how much would you pay? $30,ooo is the opening bid to “Be a Jetpack Test Pilot” on eBay.

A few caveats: “Jetpack” has long been shorthand for “technological wonder that will probably never actually arrive”; the Martin looks like it’s about as big as a Smart Car, which kind of cuts into the Bond-like coolness you’d hope to enjoy as a jetpack pilot (you can see a test subject’s knees buckle under its weight in the video below); auctioning off a few short, extremely low-altitude rides smacks of the sort of outfit whose real product is self-promotion. But with all that said, if you’re the kind of person who has thirty large to blow and a low threshold for adventure, you could probably do worse than this.

Nice, Thanks for keeping me up to date on the latest Jetpack news. I really wish science would get to work on this pressing, global matter.

If more people were concerned about jetpacks, than we wouldn’t have so much war, and political arguing.

Oh my. My first thought was: “My backpack’s got jets, well I’m Boba the Fett, I bounty hunt for Jabba Hutt to finance my ‘Vette”, etc

    Thank you for posting this.

…Yes, that’s Buzz, Boom & Sizzle… for all the best in jetpack news, since about twenty minutes ago.

    About Me

I'm a writer in Santa Monica, CA. I spent some years at Newsweek and some more writing for TV. My freelance journalism has appeared in The New Yorker, Time, Slate, The Boston Globe, Fast Company, Fortune Small Business, Washington Journalism Review, American Journalism Review, American Heritage and TV Guide, and on PBS.

I've been writing about popular culture for more than 20 years, and about technology for almost that long. I've been fascinated the last few years with the way the two have started to intertwine, so that's what I'll be looking at here: Technology, pop culture and the places where they meet. I'll also be poking around in the world of blogging, microblogging, nanoblogging, micronanoblogging and whatever comes next.
