NBC Launches “Face the Ace”

No, I’m not excited about this.  “Poker After Dark” is about the most boring poker show that’s ever been on TV.  I guess the NBC heads up tournament is ok though… Anyway, the “Pros vs Joes” angle is not amusing, as I foresee it will be whatever donkey who wins the online tournament will play horribly, and the announcer will scream about whatever card comes on the river.  As always, the only poker show worth watching is “High Stakes Poker.”

Each contestant on the show will have the opportunity to play heads up against one of the best poker players in the world. He will choose one of four cloudy doors and face whichever pro is looming behind. If the contestant loses, he’s out. If he wins, he can take whatever money he has earned and walk or challenge a second pro. There are three potential matches in all, with the possibility of $1 million on the line.

Yeah…I haven’t started watching this season of HSP yet, but have been watching NBC Heads Up on Hulu. It’s not too bad – pretty watchable. Except for the Caesar’s/online qualifiers. Other than Moneymaker in 2003, who has ever REALLY been interested in watching amateurs play poker against a pros on TV, besides maybe the family and friends of said amateur? “Face The Ace” sounds like a pretty fucking awful idea.

Havne’t been watching this season of HSP, but Ben, you raise an interesting point: what is it that makes Durrrrrrrr so annoying? I’ve tried to give him a fair shake, listened to him in interviews, etc, but he’s a hard guy to root for…I liked that he beat Helmuth at the HU’s a year ago, but it’s been down hill since then…Conversely, what do you think he does in his game that makes him unreal?

Durrr is part the new breed of poker champs who grinded up a few hundred (he claims he started with only $50) to their millions. It’s the new breed of kids who started online using a DB/HUD combination and reading a ton of books, watching a ton of videos, posting hands on 2+2, and hiring coaches.

Durrr in particular: Totally fearless of gamble, doesn’t matter how big the bet is, if he’s got a spot where he’s even slightly +EV, he’s in. He’s also very well disciplined. He claims he’s never gone broke, so that implies a very well managed bankroll. And above all that… from what I’ve seen he’s thoroughly unbelievable at hand reading, which relates pretty well to the no fear aspect, especially when he’s playing PLO.
