Laura Dekker Under Supervision, Court Gives her Sailing Ban

Laura Dekker, the 13 year old Dutch girl who wants to sail the world for the next two years, will be under supervision of the national Bureau for Youth Care for the next two months. A Dutch juvenile court didn’t withdraw the guardianship of the parents, but temporarily constrained it.

The court expressed great concern about Laura’s ability to deal with the extreme circumstances that will most likely occur during a trip like the one she has planned. The juvenile court says that a sailing trip around the world is so different from what a 13 year old girl normally encounters, that a serious threat to her development as a child is to be expected.

During the two months of temporary supervision, the court wants new research on her specific situation. A psychologist has been appointed to examen Laura. Before the end of october the court will decide if the supervision is still necessary.

Laura’s lawyer Peter De Lange yesterday said on Dutch public television station NOS that he isn’t sure that Laura will accept a ban. “She is very eager to sail.” Today he expressed his praise for the court, because “it didn’t question the role of the caring parents, who can formally keep their guardianship”. Laura was not present in court. She is expected to give a reaction later, but only for the Dutch “jeugdjournaal” (Children’s News).

More later.
