364 days later….
So much has happened: the financial meltdown and jobless recovery; the military pullout in Iraq and the looming escalation in Afghanistan; tea parties and protests. It’s hard to remember that a year ago, the nation made history. We began the day with excitement and ended it in awe. We turned a corner to travel a new path. Like or not, we can’t turn back. It’s worth remembering what we told ourselves then, now that the days seem darker and the path seems more rocky.
I’m beginning with John McCain’s concession speech because it is elegant and heartfelt. I’m ending with President Barack Obama’s acceptance because hope is a terrible thing to lose, and I fear the nation has lost not only its hope but its faith in a better future.
In times like these, “Yes we can” should be more than a campaign slogan. It should be our national mantra.
