I have to say that Fawkes has really been hijacked by the anarchist movement – Fawkes was nothing of the sort. His plan was to replace the dictatorial Protestant monarchy and aristocracy with the Catholic equivalent.
He was just a religious extremist who disliked the particular brand of religious extremism perpetrated by King James I.
That said, I do rather like the effigies being burnt this year – my favorite is in Hastings, where three pigs are being burnt to represent bankers, politicians and the introduction of charges for NHS car-parks.

While I like V for Vendetta as much as the next anarcho-Alan Moore fan… did Guy Fawkes really have a problem with the oligarchic theocracy? Or was it just the wrong oligarchic theocracy? Wasn’t the plan just to replace the Protestant King with a Catholic Queen? Which, in turn, would have given the Catholic some influence over England? Thus interfering with England’s own independence? I really don’t see anything particularly anarchisty about any of that. Unless they are the stereotypical, at least partially fictional, bomb-throwing anarchists. And if so, those people have been giving anarchists a bad name for long enough. No, no, Fawkes was basically just a religious extremist — the original suicide bomber.

With that said, I do like that often repeated line that he was “The only man to enter parliament with honest intentions!” That much is probably true.
