Thank you for bringing this back to the Soviet-Afghan War debacle of the 1980s. It seems that we as Americans have such short-term memory that we do not remember when Reagan called the mujahideen "Freedom Fighters" before offshoots of this C.I.A. funded and trained group (through Pakistan's I.S.I., just for one more degree of separation) would go on to found, among other enterprises, the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. It seems that by bankrolling Karzai we are simply heading down that same road.

It also throws a wrench into the whole "democracy" thing in Afghanistan. We are paying the president's brother to carry out services for us; how much pressure can we now put on President Karzai when the entirety of both the U.S. and Afghanistan knows his brother is a CIA beneficiary? It seems that in the game of diplomatic leverage we're currently losing.

Ms. Kilkenny,

This piece in the NYT combined with the piece from T/S's Afghan Desk (P.J. Tobia) piece about the insurgents on Facebook

http://trueslant.com/pjtobia/2009/10/22/insurgent-who-aided-bin-ladens-escape-wants-to-be-friends-on-facebook/

make it clear that Afghanistan is a true hall of mirrors, no one is what they appear to be and what they are and appear to be change constantly. Everyone is playing both ends against the middle. More than every it is unclear what the political objectives of US / NATO military presence is.

Allison, amen. These facts do seem at odds with a hope for 'a credible partner' within the Afghan government, and other democracy promoting schemes.

It has been rumored for years that the CIA uses drug money to fund it's clandestine operations to avoid Congressional oversight. Any wonder the War On Drugs is a futile, and costly, failure?
