Will this video of illegal gun sales get the same attention as ACORN?

Private investigators hired by New York City to pose as illegal gun buyers at seven firearm shows in Ohio, Tennessee and Nevada were able to buy weapons in three out of four attempted purchases, according to a report released by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The $1.5 million investigation showed 35 illicit purchases were successful from a sample of 47 transactions and that of 30 private sellers, 63 percent “failed the integrity test,” by selling a gun even after someone told them they probably couldn’t pass a background check.

I eagerly await Fox News’s stirring reports on this video-captured scandal. I just know they’ll be dying to cover this clear-cut example of illegal arms purchases, since the staff at Fox are the sentinels of justice.

During the investigation, two assault rifles and 20 semiautomatic handguns were sold to individuals who suggested they could not pass a background check. Just to clarify: a person who claims they cannot pass a background check falls under one (or more) of the following categories:

  • Convicted felons
  • People convicted of domestic assault or abuse
  • Dishonorably discharged veterans from the military
  • Illegal immigrants
  • People under indictment for felony charges
  • The mentally ill or insane
  • People with outstanding misdemeanor or felony warrants

You know, the types of people you want to be heavily armed.

In 2006, there were 590 people killed by guns in New York City. In 2008, there were 523 reported murders, a 5.2% rise from the previous year. In the city, gun violence is a big problem. Mayor Bloomberg originally ordered the investigation because 90 percent of guns recovered from crimes in New York City come from out of state.

The most obvious place to look for a lot of firearms being sold without regard to customers’ mental health (or lack thereof) would be some kind of huge, deregulated arms expo, or some weird weaponry exhibition, or something almost resembling an ammunition carnival…

…Oh! A gun show! Those things. They’re insanely dangerous. Yikes. This sounds like a major story, one I know the fine people at Fox News would hate to miss.

Remember the enthusiasm with which they pursued a story about a group of uppity black people corrupt ACORN employees, who ACORN immediately fired? Remember how the ACORN story was all about reporting the facts and getting to the truth, and not at all about a highly successful group that registers poor minorities to vote, who historically vote Democrat?

Well, the keepers of all things Fair and Balanced will apply that same standard to this Bloomberg story. Don’t you worry. Truth is coming to a television near you!

Imagine all the hours of gun control debate this will inspire! I can’t wait to see the thoughtful analysis done by Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity about the ramifications these kinds of unlawful gun exchanges have had, and will continue to have, upon our society.

Last I checked, ACORN employees haven’t killed anyone. However, many guns illegally bought at gun shows could be responsible for violent crime — not just in New York — but also in every state in America.

Deeper than a Democrat VS. Republican debate, the gun control issue is really a City VS. Country debate at heart. It is easier for residents of sparsely populated towns to dismiss the topic of gun control, but it’s quite another reality to live in a crowded metropolis like New York City, where one armed looney could kill dozens of people on a subway car.

Anyway, this will really make for lively television! Here is a real-life, major investigational finding. Will Fox News pounce or pass?

Not even close, this is the dream of the right wing, to have unfettered access to as many weapons as is possible. Be prepared to hear the 2nd amendment invoked all day long.

  2. collapse expand

I know there is more than meets the eye with this one, yet once again… the eye of the beholder. I am actively involved in self defense/combat training & own a handgun as prt of that endeavor. Sadly, it seems neither reasonable nor realistic to me that the goverment may insure the safety of it’s citizens.

Like the pot calling the kettle black~ the violence our nation commits in acts of war makes itself manifest on the community level at home. Not surprisingly, perhaps the microcosm & macrocosm are symbiotic. The solution is only partly control, it is also education about how-when & where to competently use a firearm. As a survivor of serious crime & violence several times over, let me assert this is absolutely vital.

Ultimately, it’s impossible to change the moral compass of a nation’s individuals, if its government cannot, or will not lead by example. In order to protect our constitutional right to bear arms the general public must assume personal responsibility… on a variety of levels.
