This caning incident just drives home the fact that Islam is a primitive religion mired in the 7th century. Islam is a real threat to our western culture and the alarm bells should be going off. Mark Montgomery boboberg@nyc.rr.com

About 1350 - 1400 years after Christ, Christians started the process of rationalizing their religion. The Humanist movement started the long process of separating Christian church and state. By that timeline, Islam is due for a humanist movement of its own right about now.

What I find to be interesting is that the sharia courts in Muslim southeast Asia (notwithstanding the caning incident) seem to have become steadily more conservative over the past 50 years. It seems like the influence of strict Saudi-style interpetations has caught on in Malaysia and environs, which is a shame.

I think, much like the Constitution, all but the most extreme are going to admit, and perhaps embrace the idea that the law changes over time, but there will always exist hardliners who feel any kind of change from what is explicitly stated is wrong, and will use that old language to justify outrageous actions or opinions.
