Jason Segel gave out his phone number so I called him

LOS ANGELES, CA - JUNE 13: Writer/actor Jason...

Jason Segel

The current issue of Rolling Stone, featuring a muscle-clad Taylor Lautner of Twilight fame on its cover, has something even more exciting inside: actor Jason Segel’s phone number.

At a Maroon 5 show in Queens earlier this month, Jason Segel — of How I Met Your Mother and Forgetting Sarah Marshall — duetted with lead singer Adam Levine, performing a song written by Segel: “Is it wrong to use my celebrity status to make love with a college girl tonight?” The chorus of the song was Segel’s cell phone number.

And just in case the college women might be hearing impaired, Segel had a sign made with his digits. Someone held it up over his head each time he sang the chorus. Rolling Stone included a photo in its Random Notes.

So now every Rolling Stone reader has what is alleged to be Segel’s number. The number is also available in audio version on YouTube:

Was it wrong for me to use my journalist status to call Segel up last night?

When I called, the phone just rang and rang. I sent a text message identifying myself as a journalist and asking how many calls he’d gotten, but haven’t heard back.

Segel played a variation of the song again this month with Swell Season: “Is it wrong for me to use my celebrity status to make love to a Swell Season fan tonight?” or the “1-315-329-6673 song.” Allyssa Lee at the LA Times Show Tracker blog got a little farther than me when she dialed Segel’s digit. She got a voice mail:

The phone number, it turns out, is an actual number (with a Syracuse, N.Y., area code) which quickly gives way a voicemail message issued by Segel himself, entreating callers to send an e-mail to an address that sounds a lot like healthtronics@gmail.com.

Before the Swell Season performance, Segel explained that he had asked the band’s lead singer how to write a beautiful song, and she suggested he “write a song from the heart and include as much personal information as you can.”

A better video is available from the Swell Season performance via Rolling Stone:

>I should note that Segel was born and raised in California, and has no known ties to Syracuse. So chances of the number being his actual number are low. This confirms that Segel is both hilarious and adept at viral marketing.

Perhaps he has a new movie coming out called 1-315-329-6673? And it’s about a guy who lives in Syracuse. Probably not, but there must be a whole lot of college girls out there leaving messages right about now. And I assume that Paul Rudd is calling as well, since he loves him, man.

This reminds me of when 867-5309 came out when I was a kid and everyone was calling looking for Jenny.

I’m pretty sure this post is the blog version of flexting. Which means you’re, uh, flogging. Yep. flirting + blogging = flogging

Who else should we flog today?

You should have identified yourself as a college girl instead of a journalist! Someone would have called back, I’m sure.

    • Writing with real ink

While most of my writing occurs online at Above The Law and True/Slant, I do occasionally venture into the world of print.  These are some of the magazines and newspapers that I’ve written for:

      Washingtonian Magazine

      Time Out New York

      The Orange County Register

While I’m usually a writer and reporter, I’m sometimes asked to play pundit. In November, the New York Times asked me to write a mini op-ed for its Room for Debate blog. In December, BBC radio asked me to talk about Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook privacy settings for its Newshour (19:00 minute mark), based on this True/Slant post.
