Cheaters beware: Anonymous Brazilian blogger creates ‘Cuckolds List’

Affairs made public

In an odd story from Brazil, an anonymous blogger has decided to wage a campaign to out cuckolds. The blogger has created a list of 300 men, whose wives have supposedly committed adultery.

According to the Daily Mail, the blogger is from a small rural town of Lagoa da Prata, in Minas Gerais. The list called “The cuckolds of Lagoa da Prata” has set off a firestorm in the small town. It has been printed and posted in banks and stores, as well as posted on the website Orkut, helping it to go viral. (Orkut is Google’s version of Facebook. The social-networking site is huge in Brazil and India, according to Wikipedia.)

How did the blogger make the list? And what’s happening to those implicated?

According to Brazzil Magazine, the list has unsurprisingly caused problems for a number of couples:

Since the list appeared Lagoa da Prata has also been a factory of rumors. A woman is being said to have been beaten by her husband. A housewife, who asked not be identified because her husband of 28 years was in the list. told a local publication that she and the husband had to meet the alleged lover and talk for a long time before things would go back to normal. “This is someone who wants to do us harm. The reason why I don’t know,” she said.

The wife of a businessman, in a 24-year marriage, believes that’s all a joke in bad taste. She told a reporter that she suffered a lot when she found out her husband was pointed out as a cuckold. She was the one who told him about the list and it was a very tough conversation. “It was a very embarrassing situation. But our relationship is solid and he trusts me,” she said.

The story is kind of bizarre. Is he trying to shame the men? Is he trying to help them by letting them know their partners have cheated on them? Is the list accurate?

None of the stories explain how this blogger could have compiled a list of cuckolds. Though maybe he just guessed. His odds at being right in this particular town seem to be good ones:

In 2004 a study by a Brazilian psychiatrist claimed the state of Minas Gerais had one of the country’s highest rates of infidelity among women.

Of the women interviewed as part of the study, nearly 30 per cent admitted to having had an ‘extra’ relationship.

    • Writing with real ink

While most of my writing occurs online at Above The Law and True/Slant, I do occasionally venture into the world of print.  These are some of the magazines and newspapers that I’ve written for:

      The Washington Post

      Washingtonian Magazine

      Time Out New York

      The Orange County Register

      The Washington Examiner

While I’m usually a writer and reporter, I’m sometimes asked to play pundit. In November, the New York Times asked me to write a mini op-ed for its Room for Debate blog. In December, BBC radio asked me to talk about Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook privacy settings for its Newshour (19:00 minute mark), based on this True/Slant post.
