Great point, Jeff.

Bart, I agree that there will be more of a convergence of journalistic practices. Unfortunately, I think the evolution of journalism means that we will have to learn to do everything that we do cheaper. So there will likely be a convergence of journalists' not-astronomical salaries and bloggers' incredibly meager ones. But hey, at least we get to write for a living!

It's not bloggers who are killing papers, it's the medium Putting ink on paper is just not as good a solution for getting news to people as putting electrons on screens. Reporters aren't the problem, newsprint is.
Of course the economics are going to change. Sports and weather can't subsidize serious reporting any more; each article has to stand on its own. We can't confuse the timely and righteous demise of treekilling with the timeless need for us all to stay informed about our world. If we work it out right, the losers in the new news economy will be the capitalists and the winners will be the press. If we turn the function of newspaper-like organizations into gatekeepers of the news, then the capitalists win and the people lose.

Even being an editor-in-chief of a newspaper can't hold me from agreeing with you. Still, there should be a way to combine the best of old fashioned journalism with that of blogging. Please join me in trying to find that way. Maybe by giving your comment at http://trueslant.com/bartbrouwers/2009/07/13/augmented-journalism/ or by adding an opinion at the just started augmented journalism weblog: augmentedjournalism.com.

Good article Kashmir. Let's not forget Maureen Dowd's "inadvertent" lifting of a whole passage from Josh Marshall's TPM blog for one of her weekly columns

A beautiful touché, Kashmir. Once we see that the stealing goes both ways (and newspapers steal from each other, too, by confirming but not crediting facts reported by another newspaper), it reveals the attitudes behind this story, including, maybe, some disgruntlement from one type of media about sharing territory that once was exclusive.
