Forgive me if I disagree with your cultural analysis. Ms. Muhammad is not trying to change America’s customs, traditions, or legal system. She’s asking to have her beliefs reasonably accommodated by a system premised upon the protection of individual liberties. On the one hand, you have to respect religious beliefs. On the other hand, it seems like part of the point of requiring witnesses to "appear" is so the judge and jury can get a read on the truthfulness of the witness. Maybe I spent too much time watching Lie to Me with Tim Roth, but it seems like there is a lot of credibility issues you one can read on a person's face. Maybe this just ends up being like playing poker with sunglasses on. It's not illegal, but it's not right. I think this is a very difficult issue.
